  • Joshua stays with both of his parents, Kasadha Paul and Ruth Kukiriza, in Kigwere Village. Kasadha is a fisherman on the island, but like many men there, he engages in illegal fishing because he cannot afford the expensive legal nets. This often results in his arrest and beatings by the Lake Victoria marine police and military. Despite his efforts, he can only bring home one or two fish for soup each day.
    Ruth goes to the swamps to cut papyrus, which she dries and weaves into mats for sale. Making one mat takes her three to five days, and she can sell it for only 3,000 Ugandan shillings, equivalent to about 60 pence. Their small, poor house lacks doors and windows, so they use papyrus to cover the openings. Occasionally, they try to grow some food in their garden, but it is never enough to feed the family.
    Despite these hardships, Kasadha and Ruth deeply love their children, and the children, in turn, have a passion for music and dance. Their love and shared joy in music help them stay positive amidst the challenges they face. We appeal to anyone out there to help Joshua by funding his education.
