Shirat lives with both parents in Kigwere Village. His mother, Lydia Mirembe, suffers from severe diabetes and cannot work due to their poverty and lack of proper treatment. His father, Kharim Higenyi, is a fisherman but does not own a fishing net. He is part of a group that engages in illegal fishing, catching young fish that are not government-approved.
The police frequently hunt, arrest, and detain them until their colleagues can pay a bribe for their release. This is the harsh reality the family faces. The children often lack basic necessities and cry when their father is arrested and beaten by the Lake Victoria marine police. When he returns from the police cell, he often has bruises.
At KINGSTONE UGANDA PROJECT, we believe all children deserve an equal chance to thrive. Your sponsorship can ensure a child has enough to eat, an education, and hope for the future. As a sponsor, you'll develop a special relationship with your sponsored child, receiving digital photos, handwritten messages, regular updates, and a monthly 1-5 minute WhatsApp video call.
You can choose a child to sponsor or let our team in Uganda select one in greatest need. It takes only a few minutes to become a sponsor, and you could change a child's life forever. Sponsorship costs just £15 a month, covering food, water, education, and healthcare for a child who walks to school from home.
