- Shaban loves football. He lives with both of his parents in Kigwere Village. His mother, Lydia Mirembe, suffers from severe diabetes and cannot work due to the lack of proper treatment because of their poverty. His father, Kharim Higenyi, is a fisherman but does not own a fishing net. As a result, he is part of a group that engages in illegal fishing, catching young fish that do not meet government size regulations. The police frequently hunt, arrest, and detain them until their colleagues can pay a bribe to secure their release. This is the harsh reality the family faces. The children often go without their basic needs. They are frequently in tears when their father is arrested and beaten by the Lake Victoria marine police. When he returns home from the police cell, he often has bruises.
