Edith stays with both of her parents, Kasadha Paul and Ruth Kukiriza, in Kigwere Village. Like most men on the island, Kasadha is a fisherman who engages in illegal fishing because he cannot afford the expensive legal nets. Consequently, he frequently gets arrested and beaten by the Lake Victoria marine police and military. Despite his efforts, he can only bring home one or two fish for soup each day.
Ruth goes to the swamps to cut papyrus, which she dries and weaves into mats for sale. Each mat takes her three to five days to make and sells for only 3,000 Ugandan shillings, equivalent to about 60 pence. The family lives in a small, poor house without doors or windows, using papyrus to cover the openings. Occasionally, they dig in their garden to grow some food, but it is never enough to feed the family adequately.
Despite these hardships, Kasadha and Ruth love their children dearly, and the children share a love for music and dance. Their financial hardships make paying school fees for their daughter extremely hard and we therefore ask for your support to ensure that she stays in school.
At KINGSTONE UGANDA PROJECT, we believe all children deserve an equal chance to thrive. Your sponsorship can ensure a child has enough to eat, an education, and hope for the future. As a sponsor, you'll develop a special relationship with your sponsored child, receiving digital photos, handwritten messages, regular updates, and a monthly 1-5 minute WhatsApp video call.
You can choose a child to sponsor or let our team in Uganda select one in greatest need. It takes only a few minutes to become a sponsor, and you could change a child's life forever. Sponsorship costs just £15 a month, covering food, water, education, and healthcare for a child who walks to school from home.
For £25 a month, your sponsorship will also cover boarding school, which many Ugandan children attend due to distance. Boarding schools provide running water, good toilets, and shelter during heavy rains.
